FAQs on Reduce Goose

Are your dogs friendly?

Yes!  Reduce Goose dogs are required to pass several tests with independent judges.  Dogs are disqualified from breeding if they are aggressive towards people or dogs.  In addition, they are great family dogs and love to please their handlers.

How long does it take to train the dog?

Reduce Goose dogs are tested and certified by two international organizations for natural ability, temperment and obedience.  Full testing takes approx. two years but the dogs are typically trained to a reliably serviceable degree by about 1.5 years of age.

How will we know you were there?

You will know when you see the reduction in goose droppings!  And you will also see us in action periodically if you are at the location.  Also, we do provide a bi-agreement period report that specifies some fun facts such as: the number of visits, the amount of patrolling distance covered, the estimated number of geese encountered and an estimated weight of goose droppings avoided.  We do try to keep administrative costs down, but if you have more requirements that you prefer, we can make some arrangement.

What kind of programs do you offer?

Our programs differ based on the type of business, the size of the property and features on the property like ponds or water and whether it is just one property or several.  The more properties involved the better as far as goose management goes because the goal is to make a large area unattractive.

Goose FAQs

Lifespan

Geese can live up to 25 years and have 50 goslings in their life-time.   Geese will become aggressive to humans and animals that come to close to a nest.   They can use their beaks to "bite" people- pinching, pulling and twisting.  The beak can cause significant bruising, welts and scrapes and will generally require antibiotics.  Their wings are more dangerous.  Geese use them to beat an intruder and- with an up to 6 ft wingspan - can cause broken bones, lacerations, or even concussions if they knock you over.

Accidents and Injuries caused by Geese

While deer are the most common culprits for accidents and property damage, geese were directly tracked lawsuits from tripping hazards, attacking people, property damage to cars and bird-strikes on planes .  In NJ, a driver was charged for hit-and-run for driving into geese crossing the road.

Environmental Issues

Just 1 goose can poop up to 2 lbs a day and they usually travel in flocks of 10 and over for safety.  These "gifts" negatively impact native wildlife, grass and other plants and water quality in lakes and drinking water.  In lakes and ponds, geese gifts can change oxygen levels and lead to harmful algae growth.  Geese droppings caused algae growth was one of the main reasons pets are injured and killed when stepping into polluted water.

Protected by Law

Geese are protected by various laws (both state and federal) and should not be approached.  They can also be aggressive, which is why only professionally trained dogs should be used to haze geese.  Harassing geese can lead to prosecution.
